The subject of my work is the American Pit Bull Terrier. I work primarily in mezzotint, a historical printmaking technique favored in 18th-Century England for its rich, velvety tones, subtle gradations, and ability to capture fine detail. This technique lends a soft tactility to my portraits of these hounds and allows me to convey their unique qualities, emotions, and personalities. Through this work, I strive to transmit their inherently kind and gentle natures and inspire a more positive view of this commonly misunderstood animal: the American Pit Bull Terrier is a widely persecuted dog breed and these animals are often punished because of their negative reputation. In support of my cause, I donate a portion of each sale directly to a non profit animal shelter.
Kirsten Flaherty has eight years of experience working in print-related organizations including Pace Prints, IFPDA, International Print Center New York, and Dieu Donné Papermill. She has taught numerous mezzotint demonstrations across the United States and is on the Board of Directors of the New York Society of Etchers.
